Downward Mobility and the Welfare State

I’m loath to attribute liberalism to the downward spiral of civilization and a purposeful rise in the welfare state. No one, I repeat, no one can possibly ascribe to an ideology that is predicated on the complete collapse of civil society.

So, what is it? Why does liberalism and it’s kindred cousin, Marxism, continue to pursue policies that seem to work against their own interests and that of society at large? Why is there such a lurch to accept government-run programs that seem to reinforce bad choices on the part of its beneficiaries?

A recent article by Russ Douthat of NY Times suggests that liberals are just now beginning to examine what the effects of their policies really are.

Gene’s Nickle: Time for Ice Cream

12 November, 2012

In order to assuage my near desolation brought on by the election, I decided to purchase a carton of Butter Brickle ice cream.  As I was checking out, the cashier bemoaned the fact that the hands on the clock had seemed to stop.

I have a reputation, rightly deserved, for enjoying teasing.  So in my best faux-empathy voice, I said, “Wow, you will be here allllll night.”

Her shoulders sagged, and the practiced professional smile evaporated.  The customer behind me was unloading her cart but came to the cashier’s defense and said something about me being mean.  Now it was two against one.   SWEET!

Gene’s Nickle: Thoughts on the First Nickle

5 November, 2012
I wrote my first Nickle on January 5th, 2009. In that nickle I posited the notion that the reason that Barack Obama became president is because a significant number of Conservatives couldn’t bring themselves to vote for the Moderate, John McCain.
Many things I have read or listened to over the past three and a half years have cemented that opinion.
Conservatives decided that John McCain was not conservative enough, I agreed then and now. Additionally, many Conservatives sat home because they thought they could teach the rest of America a lesson if we let a Liberal president run amok for a term.

He has foisted the initial seductive tendrils of Universal Healthcare upon us; the same model that is fiscally crippling several European nations.
He has implemented an Automotive Bailout that subsumed a world-leading automobile manufacturer, fired their CEO, and ravaged the pensions of non-union employees, while ensuring that the pensions of Organized Labor were protected.
He has submitted three budgets to the Senate. Not one budget has received a single affirmative vote. Continue reading

Notice the absence of references to Mitt. She’s correct!

It doesn’t matter who’s running, we just can’t re-elect Obama!

I talked about it today on my show.
